My 10 year old son is on a little league team.

It’s a new team. There were not a lot of options for Fall Ball (baseball is a spring sport) but we found a rec league in a town nearby.

We weren’t sure what to expect.

When we got to the field, the players were warming up. It was a bit of a motley crew. Grouping boys together that are between the ages of 10–12 years old. It is an amusing commentary on the speed and ferocity of puberty. There is easily a foot height difference between some of the kids, and more than 50lbs in weight. All within a 2 year range.

Right on time, the coach started practice. It was clear that he was a talented coach with a true love of baseball. He also had a young man helping him coach. He had a quiet way that connected with the young players. We got very lucky.

As we watched all the players, one stood out. Dressed head to toe in a full baseball uniform. She was in front of every ball. She knew what to do and where to go while most of the other boys were still squinting and fumbling.

She was a rock star. We’ll call her Jane.

Then the coach asked her to act as catcher while the boys practiced batting.
